CarboST: A monitoring system for carbon fluxes in South Tyrolean ecosystems

LogoCarboST is a project funded by the Autonomous Provinz Bozen-Südtirol within the call Research Südtirol/Alto Adige 2022 for the period 06/2024-05/2027.

The overarching objective of CarboST is (i) to develop a remote sensing-based monitoring system in the province South Tyrol which allows estimating the net ecosystem productivity (NEP) of its natural ecosystems and (ii) to blend it with estimates of the relevant lateral carbon fluxes in order to arrive at province-level estimates of the net biome production (NBP). This monitoring system is meant to provide decision makers of the province with a tool and data on which to base land use decisions compatible with the province’s climate goals.

The project consortium consists of three main partners and three associated partners:

University of Innsbruck, Institute of Ecology (UIBK)
University of Bozen/Bolzano, Faculty of Agricultural, Environmental and Food Sciences (UNIBZ)
Eurac Research, Institute for Earth Observation (EURAC)

Associated partners:

Research Center Laimburg
Forest Service
European Commission Joint Research Center Ispra

Project activities are structured around 6 work packages:

  • WP1: Project coordination (UIBK)
  • WP2: Eddy covariance CO2 flux data (UNIBZ)
  • WP3: Remote sensing (EURAC)
  • WP4: NEP algorithm development (UIBK)
  • WP5: Lateral carbon fluxes (UNIBZ)
  • WP6: Visualization and outreach (EURAC)
